MOXiI 2 - State of the trilogy (Dec 2018)

Postby morpheus » Sat Dec 08, 2018 4:46 pm

Hello All! A few things:

- AAPL is (intentionally?) holding me back from updating Vol II. I was informally promised the sources the week after Thanksgiving. That was two weeks ago. This week they released the Darwin 18 sources... EXCEPT XNU. This is quite unprecedented, but I'm at their mercy here. I don't want to publish Vol II only to have to update it first thing.

- A year later, Volume I is due for its first major update - v1.2 has details on thread policies, Remote XPC, and an entirely new chapter on networking. Overall some 50+ more pages. See http://NewOSXBook.com/ChangeLog.html#v12 . This is also the last update I am planning for Volume I.

- When Volume II finally does come out, the good news is that the deluxe hardcover and color edition set (of all three) will be available. The bad news is that, outside typos (which I'm sure it has aplenty), I am effectively ending the frequent updates of the books. Darwin 18 is the last version I intend to "support", and the OSes will have to keep evolving without me to document every subtle mutation.

Looks like they finally dropped the new XNU source code on https://opensource.apple.com/tarballs/xnu/

They still haven't updated https://opensource.apple.com/release/macos-1014.html yet though.

Yeah. I saw that when they did (kept refreshing and @S1guza told me, too :-) So for those of you reading - that means I can finish the trilogy at last. That said, the 2-3 weeks I was allocating for this end this week. Next two I already scheduled a much needed vacation (thinking I'd be hard at work on the book .. ) So ETA is for mid Jan 2019. That said, I don't foresee much delays. mid Jan 2019, give or take a week, is it.

Any updates here? I'd still like to buy the color combined trilogy.
